Baba O’Riley – The Who

This is probably one of the most epic classic rock songs ever made. The first time I really encountered this song was when I saw the trailer for the movie The Girl Next Door in which Emile Hirsch stars as a nerdy high school student about to graduate who finally lets loose and goes for the ride of his life and of course at the end gets the hottest girl. It was classic end-of-high-school affair that we have seen in the movies so many times before but for some reason the trailer got it right using this very song. Baba O’Riley captures that very spirit we feel at the end of our high school years, or even at any other milestone part of our lives, it’s that high on life. That euphoric experience we all get at that exact moment when life can’t get any better. This song is pure genius! No wonder it has survived through so many years, as it continues to be a staple of classic rock, a window into a different era, and a song that is forever timeless. From the minimalistic start to it’s iconic phrase of “Teenage Wasteland” to it’s epic violin solo at the end. Baba O’Riley is a thrill ride from beginning to end, I can almost play this song in an endless loop and I will never get tired of it. It’s just stirs emotions inside of me and creates an experience of a lifetime. Songs this great are rare to come by and when they do it’s such a divine experience.

“Out here in the fields
I plowed for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don’t need to fight
To prove I’m right
I don’t need to be forgiven”

The Real Mckenzies will release “Shine not burn” on June 22nd. You can pre order the album here. We had the pleasure of meeting the band and seeing them kick Atlanta ass back in 2004 at the now defunct Echo Lounge. Read about it here.
